Curlin Won’t Run in the Travers PDF Print

Preakness winner Curlin will not race in the Travers on August 25th but instead will run in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 30th.  Trainer Steve Asmussen will instead enter Tiz Wonderful in the Travers.  Curlin most recently finished a disappointing third in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth behind Any Given Saturday.

Lawyer Ron Favored in Salvator Mile PDF Print

The long hot summer should be especially hot when it comes to stakes races. That's because there is a plethora of stakes at tracks across the country worth big bucks.

For instance, Belmont Park offers the $400,000 Grade 1 Suburban for 3-year-olds and up on June 30. Invasor, 2006 Horse of the Year, hopes to become only the second thoroughbred in 121 runnings to post back-to-back victories. Crusader did in '26 and '27.

Filly Wins the Belmont Stakes PDF Print

Rags to Riches became the third filly in history and the first since Belmont Park opened in 1905 to win the Belmont Stakes.  Rags to Riches won a great stretch duel with Preakness winner Curlin and paid $10.60 for the win.

Battle of the sexes is nothing new.  Billy Jean King proved to the world decades ago that women can compete against men at the highest level of sport.  Throughout the ages there has always been an assumption, mostly on behalf of the more masculine members of society that male species were simply the dominant gender when it comes to athletics.  And for the most of part, throughout the history of competition that has been the case.  Although, competitors like King have shown us that that is not always the case.  And when it comes to horses, that is perhaps even less true.  On Saturday, at the running of the Triple Crown Belmont Stakes a filly will enter the race with the third best chance of winning according to odds makers and race handicappers.  And although it’s not exactly the start of anew women’s liberation movement, it is great for the sport and it will certainly draw extra attention and extra money to the horse.
