Middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (27-0-1, 17 KOs) will take on Kelly Pavlik (31-0, 28 KOs) on Saturday night in a scheduled 12-round championship bout from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Taylor has already defended his middleweight crown in recent years against Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright and Cory Spinks but he faces a tough test in undefeated fighter Kelly Pavlik, who has 28 knockouts in his 31 fights.

In case anyone was still paying attention to the heavy weight boxing division, the IBF Champion in the heavy weight division, Wladimir Klitschko successfully defended his title.  That likely means very little to most sports fans, and probably not much to boxing fans either considering the state of boxing in general and the heavyweight division in particular, but for anyone who cares about the sport, or once cared about the sport before, Klitschko’s victory is good news.  Not that the victory was any tremendous feat of that the native Ukrainian Klitschko shocked and awed the boxing community with a stupendous effort, but it goes some way towards establishing the Ukrainian as perhaps the dominant figure in heavy weight boxing and will likely set up a unification match some time the near future.

A five round fight for the vacant Strikeforce Middleweight title takes place on Friday, June 22nd from the HP Pavillion in San Jose, California as Frank Shamrock faces Phil Baroni in a fight promoted by Strikeforce and Elite Xtreme Combat.  Shamrock is 21-8-1 while Baroni is 10-7.

Shannon Briggs is not the Champion anymore.  Who?  For those of you not up to speed with what is going on in the world of heavyweight boxing -which is almost everyone in America-, reigning WBO heavyweight champion of the world Shannon Briggs was defeated on Saturday night by Sultan Ibragimov of Russia.  If you missed the fight, consider yourself lucky.  And if you paid to watch the fight on pay-per-view you should seek a refund.  Without a doubt it was one of the most truly awful fights to come along in some time and it epitomizes the lowly depths to which the heavyweight division of this sport has sunk.
